GEO vs AEO vs SEO: what a store owner actually needs to know

Three acronyms, a lot of noise, and about eighty percent overlap. Here is the plain-English difference, and where a Shopify store should really spend its time.

SEO gets you a ranked link. AEO gets you the direct answer. GEO gets you named inside an AI-generated answer. That is the whole difference in one line. SEO (search engine optimization) is the classic game of ranking in a list of blue links. AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the one direct answer, the featured snippet, the voice result. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being the store ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI names when it writes a reply. The good news for a founder: they share the same foundation, so you are not choosing between three jobs. You are doing one job that pays off in three places.

01What is SEO, in one line?

SEO is the work of ranking your pages in a search engine's list of results. It has three pillars that have not changed in a decade: technical health (a fast, crawlable, well-structured site), on-page relevance (content that matches what people search), and off-page authority (links and mentions that vouch for you). For a Shopify store that means clean collection and product pages, real reviews, and a site Google can crawl without tripping. Everything newer is built on this, not instead of it.

02What is AEO, and how is it different?

AEO is optimizing to be the single answer, not the tenth link. It grew up around Google's featured snippets and voice search, where there is only room for one response. The tactics are narrow and familiar: answer the question in the first sentence, use clear question-style headings, add an FAQ section, and structure content so a machine can lift a clean, self-contained reply. If SEO asks "how do we rank," AEO asks "how do we become the answer that gets read aloud."

Here is the thing worth noticing: everything AEO rewards is also just good writing. A page that answers fast and structures cleanly ranks better in classic search too. AEO is less a separate discipline than a sharper way of writing the same page.

03What is GEO, and why is everyone talking about it?

GEO is the work of getting your store cited inside an answer that an AI generates on the fly. The term comes from a 2024 paper by researchers at Princeton, presented at the KDD conference, which studied how pages win visibility inside generative answers from tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. It is the newest of the three because the engines it targets are new. When a shopper asks an AI for "a durable dog toy for heavy chewers," GEO is what decides whether your brand is the one it recommends.

What the Princeton team found is refreshingly unmagical. Pages that added cited sources, quotations and statistics gained visibility in AI answers by a meaningful margin on their measure. Keyword stuffing did nothing, or slightly hurt. In other words, GEO rewards credible, quotable, well-sourced content. The same content that earns trust from a human earns a citation from a machine.

04So which one should a store focus on?

All three, by building the one foundation they share, then adding the engine-specific bits last. SEO, AEO and GEO overlap far more than the acronyms suggest. The table makes the split clear.

Shared foundationclean product schema · real reviews · fast site · recognised brand · answer-first content

Read that bottom row again. The foundation is identical. Get it right and you are competing in all three at once. That is why chasing "a GEO strategy" as something separate from your SEO is usually a waste. The work is one thing.

05What actually changes in your work if you take GEO seriously?

Three habits, none of them exotic. First, write answer-first: put the real answer in the opening sentence of every page and section, not three paragraphs down. Second, back claims with named sources and real numbers, because that is what AI engines quote and what the Princeton study measured. Third, keep your product structured data and reviews complete, because that is how an engine verifies you are worth recommending. If you already do good SEO, GEO is a small tilt, not a rebuild.

The honest read for a Shopify founder: do not let the new acronym push you into a new budget line. Fix the foundation, write clearly, keep your schema and reviews clean, and you are optimizing for all three engines with one effort. We cover the full store-level playbook in the pillar.

06Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on the same foundation as SEO: structured data, reviews, brand recognition and clear content. SEO gets you a ranked link, GEO gets you named inside an AI answer. You do the same core work and it now serves both.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO, answer engine optimization, is about being the direct answer, a featured snippet or a voice result. GEO, generative engine optimization, is about being cited inside a generated answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI. They overlap heavily; both reward clear, quotable, well-structured content.
Which should an ecommerce store focus on first?
Start with the shared foundation: clean product schema, real reviews, a fast site, a recognised brand and content that answers buyer questions. That foundation serves SEO, AEO and GEO at once. Chase engine-specific tactics only after it is solid.
Does GEO need different content than SEO?
Mostly no. GEO rewards answer-first writing, question-style headings, and claims backed by named sources and statistics, which is simply good content. The Princeton GEO study found cited sources and quotes raised visibility in AI answers; keyword stuffing did not.
